Mars has no clouds or rain, but it is permanently sunny. Mars requires reduced or less energy per unit to reach from Earth than other planets except for Venus. Scientists are looking into colonizing Mars to help mitigate threats to humanity such as global climate change and war. Colonizing Mars could also bring Earth many resources.
The colonization of Mars, specifically, requires advanced equipment that will be able to provide a habitable environment for people to live long-term, including the capacity to produce and sustain food sources, acquire essentials like energy and water, and survive under harsh conditions on a distant planet.
Physical exploration of colonization of Mars is underway right now by private organizations like Mars One, which are focused on obtaining new information about the habitability of Mars and the rest of the solar system.
Robots Exploring Mars
However, space exploration of Mars has been limited to robots (for safety reasons). Robots exploring Mars are cheaper than employing humans to do so and do not require vast infrastructure to provide water, food, and breathable air. Robots are immune to the risks of cosmic radiation and can withstand the harsh environment. Researchers of space have developed a careful approach to robotic exploration of Mars that is improving every year as technological advancements are made.
Other Space Exploration
Other regions of space are also under exploration. The sun is a major focus of space exploration, as it helps to generate space weather, which affects transmission systems and power generation on Earth. And Venus is the main target of interplanetary lander and flyby missions. Mercury is the least explored of the terrestrial planets.
