Bold ideas. People who dare to dream big.

We're on a quest to improve the human condition. And we need extraordinary people to be a part of where we're headed -- and to the lead the way.

Many of the greatest discoveries of the last two decades were made using Invitrogen products, including the discovery of the AIDS virus, the sequencing of the human genome and critical advancements in cancer treatment. We're not stopping here.

Our company has never been stronger. We're growing rapidly. Become a part of Invitrogen -- more than 4000 employees in 70 countries -- delivering essential life science technologies for disease research, drug discovery and commercial bioproduction. Become a part of something extraordinary.

Position Objective:
Design, develop, implement, and integrate all automation systems for the HTS Profiling and Screening Services. Expertise in integrating laboratory automation including in-depth knowledge of troubleshooting numerous types of liquid handling systems to address failures and reduce down-time for any given automation unit is necessary. The ability to write programs on the liquid handling units, validate the programs and the instrumentation, and ensure the programs are able to communicate with other instruments such as detection readers and data analysis programs is critical. An understanding and ability to write programming scripts and other screening methods for all the liquid handling instruments in Visual Basic or other programs is required for this position. In addition, this scientist will perform assays in high throughput to characterize new chemical entities during critical business periods. Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills are essential.

Essential Functions:
? Validate, implement and integrate new automation purchases for the Screening Services to be used for profiling and selectivity screening projects as well as primary screening projects.

? Ability to think ahead and critically evaluate new automation needs with the HTS team as the Screening Services increase and expansion is necessary.

? Oversee all automation performance including liquid handling systems and detection instruments not only for the Screening Services, but also for the HTS Manufacturing team. Troubleshoot and solve issues in a rapid timeframe when associated with downed instrumentation.

? Determine the best units to integrate and which units to maintain off-line as a workstation approach in order to fully maximize capabilities and gain the best efficiencies with the automation available.

? Write programs and scripts to run the required screening projects working closely with the HTS team to ensure the systems dispense the expected volumes and programs developed are what are required to do the task at hand.

? Independently, after discussion and planning is conducted with the HTS Manager and Team, build versatile integrated automation stations to accommodate various screening services to meet the needs and demands based on the customer projects to be screened by the HTS Group.

? Responsible for maintenance of all instrumentation, QC, system back-up of programs and scripts from automation, repairs and servicing working closely with respective vendors, and support of robotic screening components (liquid handling automation and detection instruments).

? Assist with the execution of profiling projects during critical business times.

? Maintain complete and thorough lab notebooks documenting processes and changes made to systems.

? Interface and collaborate with other departments (i.e.: IT department) to generate a robust and reliable automation screening system.

? Effectively communicate and present scientific ideas to a broader audience. Participate in scientific conferences and contribute to scientific journals.

? Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competitor products and attending scientific seminars and meetings.

? Contribute scientific expertise and critique across groups within the company.

? Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures.

? Organizational and detail oriented.

? Respond quickly to changing priorities.

? Other duties as assigned.

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or other related discipline, or the equivalent knowledge and experience is required.

Experience:
Requires 7 years experience in a work environment with a Bachelorī»žs degree. A minimum of 2 years working with automation equipment utilized in HTS. Visual Basic programming skills is valuable. Demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles. Proven proficiency in designing automation lay-out. Demonstrated competence in utilizing new techniques, procedures, and technologies for HTS required. Experience in developing and implementing biochemical and cell-based assays for kinase, protease, and nuclear receptor targets as well as a practical knowledge of fluorescence technologies (FP, FRET, and TR-FRET) is desirable. Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific ideas to a broader audience.
