SUMMARY
Consults with customers to specify, sell, project manage, and implement software and hardware upgrades for a wide range of robotic laboratory automation systems and workstations. May execute special project assignments in customer support, service, validation, methods transfer and new product beta site installations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Delights the customer during all phases of work to provide superior customer satisfaction thereby becoming our customer partner of choice for laboratory automation solutions.

2. Generates and pursues sales leads, consults with customers, develops, prepares and presents proposals and quotes, and closes Field Application Services business.

3. Interfaces with Sales in support of ongoing product upgrades, re-engineering efforts and as a source of new leads.

4. Extracts and understands customer's application needs and translates to requirements for hardware, software at the module, application, and user interface and data handling levels, and applies Caliper products and capabilities to meet these needs.

5. Interfaces with Program Management and Design Engineering to specify and determine pricing, availability and resource allocation for custom hardware and module level software.

6. Participates in customer visits for kick-off, design review and factory acceptance.

7. Sets and manages customer expectations on technical and deliverable aspects of each Field Application Services job.

8. Manages, prioritizes, and schedules all work to be performed to satisfy internal and external customer demands.

9. Manages business pipeline from lead through invoice, striving to meet or exceed established quotas for invoiced business.

10. Initiates communications to internal and external customers to advise and update their activities, whereabouts, and accomplishments.

11. Communicates strategic customer information and sales leads to the appropriate Caliper Sales Account Manager.

12. Prepares timely, complete, and accurate expense and service reports and manages travel and communication expenses at or below budget.

13. Operates with high integrity and professionalism.

14. Informs customers about new products that may be of interest in their laboratory.

15. Seeks experience and training to maintain Caliper product expertise and advance technical and interpersonal skills.

16. May execute special project assignments in customer support, service, validation, methods transfer and new product beta site installations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No direct reports but will be asked to supervise Field Service Engineers who may participate in Field Application Services jobs and/or require assistance in a difficult customer situation.
Application Engineering Consultants will also indirectly supervise, project manage and communicate with customers when engaged in a Field Application Services job.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Demonstrated proficiency in PC operating systems, office suite software, and a visual application programming language.

2. Excellent customer, interpersonal and presentation skills.

3. Available for up to 50% overnight, worldwide travel.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Minimum of a Bachelors degree or equivalent in mechanical, chemical, electrical, bio-medical or software engineering, or computer science. Minimum of 8-to15 years relevant technical software experience. Experience with NT and object based programming in Visual Basic required. Experience with laboratory automation/liquid handling and advanced development and solution-based projects highly desirable.
