RESEARCH ASSOCIATE ?LAB AUTOMATION

About Us:
BD Biosciences is a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company; NYSE: BDX) and is built on the BD 100+-year foundation of quality, reliability, and commitment to customers and business partners around the world. As one of the world's largest businesses serving the life sciences, BD Biosciences provides tools to study life from normal processes to disease states and to accelerate the pace of biomedical discovery and diagnosis. BD Biosciences has three units - - Discovery Labware, Immunocytometry Systems, and Pharmingen, and provides integrated, high-value products and services for a variety of applications in the life sciences, including genomics, proteomics, ADME/Tox, oncology, and immune function. Discovery Labware develops, manufactures and markets innovative products for tissue culture, fluid handling, drug discovery, and drug metabolism featuring its key BD Falcon, BD BioCoat and BD Gentest brands. There are three Discovery Labware locations in the Boston area: Bedford, MA; Billerica, MA; and Woburn, MA.

JOB SUMMARY: Working out of the Bedford facility, the incumbent will work closely with R&D; scientists, engineers, and external customers to automate cell-based assays, co-author application notes and posters, and evaluate prototype plastic labware and reagent products. Specific responsibilities include evaluating and helping to identify best technologies/products for specific assays; setting up cell-based, enzymatic and ADME assays on different robotic workstations; assisting in the establishment of a core automation applications laboratory (i.e. fluorescence plate readers, fluid handling robotic workstations, HTS equipment, robotic arms, microplate washers, incubators, plate sealers, hotels, centrifuges, vacuum manifolds, etc.); building relationships with major suppliers of lab robotic systems, reagents, plastic consumables; and identifying optimal product configurations for BD assays. Serves as a business resource in the application of robotics and lab automation product design theories, concepts, principles and process. US travel 15%; some international travel possible.

REQUIREMENTS: Requires a BS or MS in a life science discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Biomedical Engineering) with 2-5 years of direct robotics and lab experience in R&D.; Experience with high throughput screening systems is preferred. Requires a demonstrated working knowledge of basic lab techniques (i.e. tissue culture, buffer prep, aseptic vialing, protein purification, cell lines and cell based assays) and automated workstations to include microplate-based robotic instrumentation. Knowledge of plastic product design and fabrication as applied to disposable labware and/or reagents is a plus, but is not required. Must be a self starter capable of working with minimal supervision within a cross functional team environment. Computer literacy required; i.e. MS Office and general PC software with a willingness to learn other programs. Must have effective organization, planning and goal setting skills plus excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated success working in a team environment to achieve desired goals. Must be results oriented. Advanced oral and written communication skills are required, to include giving effective presentations.
