Location: Greater Toronto Area. Job Title: Director of Research & Development Laboratory Automation and Integration
Responsible for providing the leadership and direction to the R&D; organization in order to develop high tech, cost effective products in support of the Laboratory Automation Integration business plan. This position also acts as Chief Technical Officer for the business unit ensuring that Laboratory Automation Integration adheres to its technical strategy, and protects its intellectual capital.
Essential Job Functions
Provide the necessary direction, encouragement, and resources to ensure that Laboratory Automation Integration remains a leading supplier of laboratory automation technology for drug discovery and other biopharmaceutical markets.
Continue to implement and improve the LEAN product development (Product Delivery Team) methodology at Laboratory Automation Integration
Lead and coach development team, according to LEAN principles. Develop technical training requirements for technical staff.
Create and achieve approval for all R&D; budgets for projects, including capital expenses, operating expenses, etc.
Oversee the R&D; organization to ensure the adherence to performance, time and expense requirements for R&D; projects.
Provide the necessary R&D; resources to support the approved R&D; projects and adjust those resources when appropriate.
Oversee the preparation and filing of patents in support of the Laboratory Automation Integration IP strategy.
Assure the adherence to appropriate quality requirements (ISO 9001, FDA, etc.).
Formulate technology strategy consistent with the business unit's mission and market goals.

Able to travel extensively.
Very good communicator, both written and oral, to all levels and functions of the company
Educational/Experience Qualifications:
Post graduate degree in engineering, specializing in mechanical/software/systems with 10 years experience is desired or a Bachelors degree with appropriate work experience
Having worked in a LEAN Product Development (Concurrent Engineering) development environment
Demonstration of successful managing of R&D; projects that incorporate high technology products and are integrated into sophisticated systems that satisfy customer applications.
Experience with compliance to ISO 9001 and/or FDA Quality requirements, such as US 21 CFR Part 11.
?Experience Qualifications:
8+ years of direct experience in research and development leadership within a large professionally managed operating company.
5 years of the experience must have been in a product manufacturing organization.
Able to co-ordinate mechanical/electrical/software development engineering teams.
Ability to provide specifications for new products.
Knowledge of CAD related design tools.
Experience in project management, including customer liaison, work planning, reporting.
Superior presentation skills, both written and oral.
Strategic thinker.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
