Title: Laboratory Automation Team Leader

Job Responsibilities:


  • Provide hands-on leadership to a team of laboratory automation and instrumentation technologists based at BMS Hopewell, NJ campus. The team builds and supports automated systems for high-throughput Discovery processes, designs and builds custom instrumentation and provides tactical engineering services to the Hopewell site. The team leader mission is to ensure that the team and the local technology infrastructure is operating effectively and providing maximum value to the BMS Drug Discovery organization.

  • Identify, design and develop laboratory automation systems, instruments or components that implement critical-path workflows for high-throughput Discovery processes.

  • Work closely with Informatics specialists to ensure that the automated infrastructure is effectively integrated into the broader Informatics environment.

  • Coordinate support as needed from vendors and internal BMS resources to provide quality control and maintenance services for laboratory instrumentation.

  • Provide expertise on the latest products and developments in the laboratory automation and instrumentation field with an eye towards applying new technologies to the needs of BMS Discovery.

Requirements:


  • MS/PhD or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or an aligned field.

  • 7-10 years experience developing and supporting laboratory automation and instrumentation in an industrial setting, including significant project management experience.

  • Previous line supervisory experience is not required but demonstrated strong people-leadership skills are essential.

  • Proven ability to operate successfully in a multi-disciplinary matrix environment.

  • Good working knowledge of high-throughput drug discovery processes and the role of laboratory automation in drug discovery.

  • Good understanding of biological data acquisition, data reduction and reporting processes.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with biologists and chemists. Understand the science behind their applications well enough to drive troubleshooting and to propose technological solutions. Be able to convey complex technical concepts to a lay audience.

  • Hands-on experience configuring, programming and troubleshooting articulated robotic arms and scheduling systems (preferably Thermo CRS Polara) and liquid handling systems (eg Tecan, Velocity11, CyBio, Apogent / Matrix).

  • Experience with some or all of the following: computer aided engineering design tools, laboratory instrument control programming (e.g. Visual Basic, C/C++, LabView), use of relational databases (Oracle, MS-Access) and SQL/PLSQL.
