Orbital Shaker

• Problems:

  • The shaker needed for this system must be able to sufficiently agitate a small volume of solution (0.5 mL) and be able to shake up to 25 tubes at one time.
  • Have the shaker stop in the same position each time that a tube was retrieved or replaced.
  • Temperature control of tubes between user specified range (10oC-37.5oC).

• Solutions:

  • A variable speed orbital shaker (Make and model) was selected and customized by adding a 30-position rack. (See Figure 1)
  • Use of pneumatic pins and guides attached to the shaker which are engaged prior to the pull. (See figure 2)
  • The tubes are kept at a constant temperature while on the shaker by using a Neslab?heater/circulator and Zymark?chiller system. (See Figure 3)
