From: Andy Zaayenga Subject: Re: Lab-Robotics: Liquid handlers with disposable pipette tips Date: Fri, 04 Dec 1998 14:36:25 -0500 Donald, I visited one of the labs that are using positive displacement pipetting on a Zymark system for cremes. They are using a Digital Varimetric Micropipettor, Size 4, for 250-1000 ul volumes. It uses Barnstead Thermolyne MPT 10004 barrel style tips. This design has a non-disposable plunger and a disposable barrel. The pipettor is just a manual device affixed to the Zymark hand such that the gripper servo controls the thumb actuator. The other system I worked on had the same manual pipettor / Zymark hand setup, but the pipet tips were wholly disposable. The PDP tips had an inner plunger that could be disposed of along with the barrel, so cross-contamination was not an issue. Did you find a solution yet? Below are the specifics of what I need. Hopefully one of you direct me to either the correct person that can help me locate such a device OR a specific company that sells the device. Thanks in advance for your help. DESCRIPTION: A microplate hotel that holds 10 to 20 microplates. This hotel would have a serial interface for connecting to my PC. The PC would send commands to the hotel to slide out a single microplate and slide it back in when I'm through with it. This hotel will be integrated into my existing robotic arm system which has the ability to pickup and dispense liquid from a microplate. The capacity depends on your configuration needs. It can be configured with eight shelf hotels for deep well microplates and tip boxes or with 18 shelves for standard sized microplates. You can take a look at it at http://www.beckmancoulter.com/Beckman/biorsrch/prodinfo/biomek/sagianstn ..asp Best Regards, Rob Donoho Rob.Donoho@SPAMFOIL.SAGIAN.COM 317.808.4293 -----Original Message----- From: dpowrie@SPAMFOIL.nanogen.com [SMTP:dpowrie@SPAMFOIL.nanogen.com] Sent: Friday, December 18, 1998 8:39 PM To: Lab-Robotics Mailing List Subject: Lab-Robotics: microplate hotel --------------------- Lab-Robotics --------------------- I am looking for a "microplate hotel" for use with my robotic arm. We use 20, 30, or 60 plate removable magazines, present right or left, portrait or landscape and can stack deep well and 24 well in addition to standard size microplates. CRS uses their large arm to move entire 20 plate magazines to really optimize robot utilization. The Hudson stacker has the capability to slide plates out to a waiting robotic arm. Our Brandel hotel has also given me good performance -- however it does not slide plates out, instead it rotates to allow an arm to pick up a microplate, DWP, or test tube rack from one of its shelves. Date: Sun, 20 Dec 1998 20:34:44 -0500 Happy Holidays to all from the Laboratory Robotics Interest Group board! 1998 has been an incredible year for the LRIG with a phenomenal increase in our membership to over 2,150 members. This Discussion Mailing List has over 400 subscribers. Our Boston, Massachusetts chapter has formed and will soon have their first meeting. The RTP, North Carolina and Bay Area, California chapters are pulling together. There are plans for European chapters also! We are striving to become more "virtual" with mailing lists like this and posting presentations to our web site. This will serve our widespread membership. Thank you for helping us grow. On to some Discussion Mailing List business - some subscribers have received occasional blank messages. If this happens to you, please reply to the message and let us know that the message was empty. We are working with the software author to track this problem and eliminate it. It would help us to know what your email program is, and who your Internet Service Provider is. This Mailing List has an interesting dynamic. We go for some time without activity, then a post is followed by a flurry of replies. There are over 400 subscribers - you would expect more posts. Please feel free to post any question, comment, or opinion. We are in such a rapidly changing industry that there must be many questions or comments you have. Don't be shy and just "lurk". It's a cliche, but the only stupid question is one that you don't ask! Finally, a clarification on vendor's postings. It is entirely appropriate for a vendor to reply to a post inquiring about some desired capability or hardware. We just don't want this list to be inundated by UNSOLICITED sales oriented messages. The appropriate place for new product announcements is on our web site. Some vendors felt that they were prohibited from replying to queries for solutions on the list - not true! Thanks for listening. Have a great holiday! Is there any difference in sensitivity ?
