Saigen Core System (Biomeks etc....)

I am looking for feedback on the Saigen automated system utilizing the ORCA 3meter linear track robot. I have been using Biomeks for about 5 years in addition to Gilson 215 septum piercing systems. I am attempting to set-up a fairly robust automated workstation that would conduct multiple assay methodologies including: molecular, immunological and conventional virology assays. Hence, these would include PCR, ELISA, Serum Virus Neutralization, Hemagglutination and Virus Titration assays. Ideally, I'd integrate Biomeks, plate washers/readers, Gilson's and thermocyclers to this system. Has anyone setup a multifunctional automated station? What are the integration headaches of this goal? Are the Saigen/Beckman systems reliable, or powerful enough?

As space is a criticle parameter, I've only got 12 1/2 feet by 12 1/2 feet to work with unless I do some extensive remodeling at which I could expand to 22x12. Am I fooling myself with a goal of robust, versatile automation? I could easily leave these assays as workstation driven, but then of course, I'm stuck feeding the silly machines. I'd really appreciate any feedback that you might be able to provide.

Thanks, Greg
